Soviet Tanks End the Prague Spring
Warsaw Pact armies crushed Alexander Dubček’s attempt to build socialism with a human face.
Late on the night of 20 August 1968, an estimated 200,000 to 250,000 troops and thousands of tanks from four Warsaw Pact nations crossed into Czechoslovakia. Code-named Operation Danube, the assault eventually marshaled roughly 450,000 to 500,000 soldiers under Soviet command, drawing smaller contingents from Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria. Romania refused to participate, while Albania withheld its forces and subsequently severed ties with the pact. East German combat units were held back hours before the launch, after Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev grew concerned that German forces operating on Czechoslovak territory would evoke memories of the occupation three decades earlier and incite fierce domestic resistance.
The invasion aimed to crush the political experiment known as the Prague Spring. Commencing with Alexander Dubček's elevation to First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in January 1968, the movement sought to balance socialist economics with personal liberties. Dubček promoted what he termed socialism with a human face, introducing an Action Programme that curtailed the secret police, prepared for a federal division between Czech and Slovak territories, expanded consumer goods, and dismantled government censorship. The removal of press restrictions transformed national media into forums for public debate, where citizens re-examined past Stalinist repressions and questioned state doctrine.
