Huaynaputina Erupts and Starves Russia

The largest eruption in South American history cooled the globe and helped trigger Russia’s deadly famine of 1601.

On February 19, 1600, the volcanic vent of Huaynaputina in southern Peru broke apart in the largest recorded volcanic eruption in South American history. Positioned within an amphitheatre-like structure on a high Andean plateau, the site lacked a prominent cone and had not been recognized as an active threat by nearby communities. Four days of precursor tremors gave way to a violent Plinian blast, launching an ash column that rose more than 30 kilometers into the atmosphere. The catastrophic event continued with explosive pulses, ash fall, and pyroclastic flows until early March, leaving the local landscape permanently changed.

The immediate impact devastated the surrounding Andean valleys. Pyroclastic flows swept through regional drainages, damming the Río Tambo and triggering torrents of boiling water, pumice, and debris when the blockages failed. In nearby settlements such as Puquina, residents observed pillars of fire before falling tephra and pumice engulfed the terrain. In Arequipa, roughly 75 kilometers to the northwest, ash falls collapsed roofs and plunged the area into daytime darkness, while the concussions were heard hundreds of kilometers away along the Pacific coast. Estimates of the local death toll vary widely, but the eruption killed well over a thousand people, smothered vegetation and covered the surrounding plateau with deep volcanic deposits.
