The Great Exhibition Opens in the Crystal Palace
Inside a hall of iron and glass in Hyde Park, Britain showed off the machines and goods of the industrial age, and about six million visits were made before it closed.
On May 1, 1851, the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations was opened by Queen Victoria inside a vast glass and iron structure in London's Hyde Park. Conceived by members of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, later the Royal Society of Arts, the ambitious undertaking was championed by Prince Albert and civil servant Henry Cole. Britain had watched the success of the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 and sought an international stage to display its own technological and commercial strength. To oversee the effort, the British government established the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, securing funding through citizen subscriptions and entry fees rather than direct public expenditure.
The building housing the exhibits quickly became known as the Crystal Palace. Designed by Joseph Paxton, who drew on his experience building large greenhouses, the structure measured 1,848 feet long by 454 feet wide. Paxton worked alongside structural engineer Charles Fox, while an oversight committee that included civil engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel helped guide the project, and the building itself went up in about eight months. Erected from prefabricated cast iron components and glass produced primarily in Birmingham and Smethwick, the transparent hall enclosed living elm trees and statues within its central space, demonstrating contemporary architectural and structural capabilities.
