Flash Floods Devastate the Towns Around Valencia

A storm dropped close to a year’s rain in hours, and torrents swept through towns south of the city.

On October 29, 2024, an isolated high-altitude low-pressure weather system swept across eastern and southern Spain, triggering catastrophic flash floods. The deluge concentrated heavily in the Valencian Community, while also causing severe damage in Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia. In several localities, intense rain dropped the equivalent of an entire year of precipitation within a single day. Torrents overwhelmed natural channels, collapsed roads, inundated residential districts, and claimed at least 232 lives across the country, with more than 220 fatalities occurring in the province of Valencia alone.

A confluence of natural geography, regional development, and meteorology intensified the disaster. The city of Valencia sits on a flat alluvial plain, hemmed in by interior mountains that force incoming marine air upward to condense into heavy downpours. Decades of coastal urbanization had carpeted the surrounding area with impervious asphalt and concrete, preventing floodwaters from soaking into the earth. At the same time, high sea temperatures in the Mediterranean and Atlantic fueled unprecedented atmospheric evaporation. Scientific analysis indicated that the warming waters made the storm significantly more likely and increased rainfall intensity by an estimated 12 percent.
