Claudia Sheinbaum Becomes Mexico’s First Woman President

A climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City took office two centuries after independence.

On October 1, 2024, Claudia Sheinbaum took the oath of office before the Congress of the Union, becoming the sixty-sixth president of Mexico. The historic transition occurred more than two centuries after Mexican independence, marking the first time a woman had ever held the nation's supreme executive office. Handed the presidential sash by congressional leader Ifigenia Martínez, Sheinbaum also became the first person from a Jewish background to lead the country. Her inauguration drew foreign delegations from around the world and marked an extraordinary political milestone for a country where female political leadership had encountered structural hurdles for generations.

Sheinbaum came to national prominence through a career that coupled environmental academia with public administration. Born in Mexico City in 1962 to left-wing scientists, she completed a physics degree before earning a doctorate in energy engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In between university appointments, she researched transport energy usage at California's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and contributed to assessment reports for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Her transition to executive governance began under Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who appointed her environment secretary for the Federal District in 2000.
