Wind-Driven Wildfires Burn Through Los Angeles

Fires in Pacific Palisades and Altadena destroyed thousands of homes in one of the costliest disasters in US history.

On January 7, 2025, powerful Santa Ana winds combined with intense drought to ignite and spread multiple catastrophic blazes across Southern California. Forecasters had warned of extreme fire weather, marked by severe dry spells that followed two unusually wet winters, which had spurred extensive vegetation growth that later dried into volatile fuel. Descending over regional mountain ranges, hurricane-force wind gusts reached speeds up to 100 miles per hour at Mount Lukens and fanned small sparks into massive conflagrations that overwhelmed local emergency defenses.

The disaster was driven primarily by two massive blazes: the Palisades Fire in west Los Angeles and the Eaton Fire in the Altadena and Pasadena areas. The Palisades Fire began on the morning of January 7 near the site of an earlier eight-acre blaze known as the Lachman Fire, which had smoldered underground after being declared contained on January 1. Propelled rapidly into residential communities such as Malibu and Pacific Palisades, the fire outran early suppression efforts and consumed thousands of structures. Hours later, the Eaton Fire ignited in Eaton Canyon, reportedly near an electrical tower, before quickly sweeping into residential areas around Altadena and Pasadena.
