Ivan IV Is Crowned the First Tsar of All Russia

At sixteen, the grand prince of Moscow was crowned in the Kremlin’s Dormition Cathedral with the title of tsar, claiming a rank equal to emperors.

On 16 January 1547 Old Style (26 January New Style), the sixteen-year-old Grand Prince Ivan Vasilyevich was crowned inside the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. During the ceremony, the metropolitan anointed him with myrrh and invested him with the signs of royal authority, including the cap of Monomakh, the barmas, and the Cross of the Life-Giving Tree. While previous Muscovite sovereigns had ruled as grand princes, Ivan assumed the formal title of tsar of all Russia. About two weeks after the coronation, he married Anastasia Romanovna, who became the realm's first tsaritsa.

This elevation in rank signaled a profound political and theological shift. Earlier rulers, notably Ivan's grandfather Ivan III, had used the term tsar in diplomatic exchanges, but Ivan IV transformed it into an institutionalized domestic title. As modern historians have noted, the title placed the Muscovite monarch on an equal footing with both the former Byzantine emperor and the Tatar khan. It also framed the sovereign as an earthly instrument of divine authority, answering to no secular power. To enhance their prestige among European dynasties, Muscovite genealogies linked Ivan's lineage to Rome and the legendary Roman figure Prus.
