The Taupō Volcano Blasts Out One of Earth’s Most Violent Eruptions
An explosion in the heart of the North Island flattened forests across thousands of square kilometres before humans arrived.
Around 232 CE, the Taupō Volcano in the central North Island of New Zealand produced the Hatepe eruption, recognized as the country's most powerful volcanic event in the past 20,000 years. Geologists estimate that the event ejected as much as about 105 cubic kilometers of loose tephra, ranking it alongside catastrophic Holocene blasts such as the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora. In an exceptionally violent phase lasting only six to seven minutes, the vent discharged over 30 cubic kilometers of material. Because Polynesian voyagers who became the Māori did not arrive until more than a millennium later, the surrounding territory contained no known human communities at the time of the cataclysm.
Despite a largely uniform rhyolitic magma composition, the eruption exhibited a complex succession of phases, ranging from early phreatomagmatic interactions with groundwater to towering Plinian columns and high-velocity ground-hugging flows. Geologists divide the deposits into a series of distinct layers, one for each phase of the eruption. Westerly winds carried the lighter airfall ash eastward across the North Island and out over the Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, the towering plume, an estimated 35 to 40 kilometers high, injected ash into the upper atmosphere, and microscopic glass shards from it were later found in an Antarctic ice core.
