The Dream Team Wins Olympic Gold in Barcelona

The first US Olympic team with NBA stars won every game by more than 30 points and spread basketball around the world.

On August 8, 1992, the United States men's Olympic basketball team defeated Croatia 117-85 in Barcelona to claim the gold medal. Popularly known as the Dream Team, the squad was the first American Olympic contingent permitted to field active players from the National Basketball Association. The roster had been assembled following an April 1989 vote by FIBA, the governing body of international basketball, which ended the longstanding restriction that limited Olympic tournaments to amateur competitors. Prior to that rule revision, American teams had consisted entirely of collegiate and amateur players, leading to a bronze-medal finish at the 1988 Summer Games that was then the worst American result in Olympic basketball.

Ten professional players were originally named to the roster in September 1991, featuring prominent stars such as Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan. Bird and Johnson served as co-captains, while Chuck Daly was appointed head coach. The final two positions were filled in May 1992 by Clyde Drexler and collegiate standout Christian Laettner of Duke University, who filled the roster spot reserved for a college player, chosen over fellow collegiate prospect Shaquille O'Neal. Notably excluded was Detroit Pistons guard Isiah Thomas. Contemporary speculation linked his omission to past rivalries with Jordan, though members of the selection committee offered differing accounts in later years regarding whether personal animosity actively shaped the roster decisions.
