Alfonso the Wise Gathers 420 Songs to the Virgin

The Cantigas preserve medieval melodies with painted scenes of Christian, Muslim and Jewish musicians.

During the thirteenth-century reign of King Alfonso X of Castile, the royal court assembled the Cantigas de Santa Maria, one of the largest surviving bodies of monophonic solo song from medieval Europe. Comprising 420 poems accompanied by musical notation, the anthology reflects the intellectual and artistic activities directed by the monarch, commonly remembered as Alfonso the Wise. Four manuscript codices have survived into the modern era, preserving these sacred compositions alongside striking visual artwork that documents the musical culture of the medieval Iberian Peninsula.

The texts are written in Galician-Portuguese rather than Castilian, which served as the primary language for Alfonso's major legal, historical, and prose workshops. Galician-Portuguese enjoyed considerable prestige at the Castilian court as a lyric medium, familiar to audiences through secular traditions such as songs of love and friendship. Alfonso himself had spent parts of his youth in Galicia, acquiring fluency in the dialect. While centuries of tradition attributed the entire body of work directly to the king, modern research concludes that court poets and musicians composed the majority of the collection. The monarch likely authored a select number of pieces, appearing as a narrator in the first person, and studies have pointed to figures such as the Galician poet Airas Nunes as possible contributors.
