The Bhola Cyclone Kills Hundreds of Thousands in East Pakistan
The deadliest tropical cyclone on record, and a slow response from the government, helped spark a war of independence.
On the evening of 12 November 1970, an intense tropical cyclone made landfall across the low-lying coast of East Pakistan, coinciding with local high tide. The storm, which had gathered strength over the central Bay of Bengal during the preceding days, drove a catastrophic surge of seawater across the Ganges Delta. Coastal settlements and offshore islands were submerged by a storm surge estimated at about six metres, and survivors described water even deeper in places. The tempest devastated Bhola Island, Hatia Island, and the mainland shore, wiping out villages, destroying thousands of boats, and ruining vast tracts of agricultural land. It remains the deadliest tropical cyclone on record.
Ascertaining the full human toll proved difficult amid the widespread ruin. Estimates consistently place the minimum number of fatalities at 300,000, with possible losses reaching as high as 500,000 people. Field surveys documented staggering regional devastation. In the most severely affected area, Tazumuddin, over 45 percent of a population of about 167,000 perished. The demographic losses fell disproportionately on the young and the vulnerable, with children under ten accounting for more than half of all fatalities. In addition to the direct drownings, the storm destroyed or badly damaged about 85 percent of homes in the affected area and wiped out roughly 65 percent of the coastal region's fishing capacity.
