Rebels Enter Damascus and the Assad Dynasty Falls
A lightning offensive ended more than fifty years of rule by the Assad family, and Bashar al-Assad fled to Moscow.
On December 8, 2024, the government of Bashar al-Assad collapsed as opposition forces entered the capital city of Damascus, ending over five decades of Ba'athist rule by the Assad family. The rapid offensive was spearheaded by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham alongside other rebel coalitions, including the Syrian National Army and the Southern Operations Room. The breakthrough represented the culmination of a conflict that began in 2011 with the uprising during the widespread unrest of the Arab Spring. Decades earlier, in 1970, Hafez al-Assad had seized control through a coup d'état, establishing a pervasive cult of personality and militarized rule that his son inherited after Hafez died in June 2000, taking office the following month.
The collapse developed with unexpected speed following weeks of planning by northern opposition units. According to Reuters, the rebels had shown Turkey their plans after Assad repeatedly rebuffed Turkish attempts at reconciliation, although Ankara denied backing the offensive. Opposition leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, previously known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammad al-Julani, publicly announced that the goal was the removal of the regime, pledging the establishment of representative institutions and the protection of minority groups. After only about a day of fighting, insurgent units announced full control of the city of Homs early on December 8, severing critical transport links connecting Damascus to the coastal governorates where Russian bases and loyalist strongholds were situated.
