The Netherlands Declares War on the Sultanate of Aceh

The Dutch invaded the independent sultanate on Sumatra’s tip and began the longest war of their colonial history.

On March 26, 1873, the Kingdom of the Netherlands declared war on the Sultanate of Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra, and its first expedition landed in April, opening the longest and most draining armed struggle in Dutch colonial history. Throughout the early nineteenth century, Aceh had maintained its independence under the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 while remaining a leading pepper-producing region. That diplomatic protection shifted after the 1869 opening of the Suez Canal altered regional trade routes. Under the 1871 Anglo-Dutch Treaty of Sumatra, the British abandoned territorial claims on Sumatra in exchange for commercial concessions and Dutch territory in West Africa, leaving the Dutch free to subdue native states and suppress piracy across the region.

Dutch officials found a pretext for invasion in early 1873 after learning that Acehnese diplomats had opened discussions with the American consul in Singapore regarding a bilateral agreement. Major General Johan Harmen Rudolf Köhler led the initial naval bombardment and landing at Banda Aceh. Dutch planners intended to seize the sultan's palace quickly and bring the entire state under colonial control. Instead, Acehnese defenses held, and colonial troops suffered severe tactical setbacks. Köhler was killed at the Great Mosque, and the first expedition lost dozens of men dead and more than 400 wounded, forcing an embarrassing retreat that severely damaged Dutch imperial prestige.
